As a child I remember reading and re-reading a stunning book called Family, a collection of essays by anthropologist Margaret Mead with poignant, powerful photographs by Ken Heyman, reflecting diverse families from around the world. Many of those images--a father lifting his young son high into the air, the pained look of a woman living in abject poverty--have stayed with me my whole life.
My creative side has expressed itself in different periods throughout my life--including fabric painting,
calligraphy, song-writing, and playing flute, piano and guitar, but my desire to take photographs, to be
inspired by the beauty of nature as well as people being wonderfully and wholly human, has remained
steadfast for several decades. I especially remember being mesmerized while on vacation in Quebec City
watching professional photographers give great joy to their clients who were dressing up in costumes
and abandoning themselves to the moment and the camera--I was hooked!
In my twenties while teaching music in the public schools in Salem, MA, I loved photographing my
students' unmasked expressions. While completing my Masters thesis at Lesley College (Cambridge, MA)
I took photographs to create educational media to raise consciousness about feminist issues; the filmstrip
was later marketed and distributed nationally through Women’s Educational Media Inc., a non-profit
organization I founded (now Groundspark).
Since I’ve owned my Apple computer (thank you, Steve Jobs), I have created numerous photo books
and movies for family and friends and in my former fifteen year position as piano consultant at M. Steinert & Sons, Boston’s Steinway piano dealership. I've especially enjoyed collaborating with other artists (including
amazing Phil Schoonmaker and the late wonderful Bill St. George).
Other passions include playing the piano (J. S. Bach is my favorite composer, George and Andrew Li
are favorite pianists), my daily outdoor walks, and spending time with young people. I am
a long-time member of the Mystic Chorale Community and Camp Camp Community, a fan of
Rachel Maddow, and a friend of Bill W.
